The post Chris Loves Julia’s Tile-Focused Mood Boards appeared first on The Tile Shop Blog.
]]>If you’re anything like us, you’ve been continuously inspired by the timeless interiors created by Julia Marcum, the design mind behind the popular blog, Chris Loves Julia. Ever since partnering with the husband-and-wife duo in 2012 on their very first kitchen remodel, we’ve had the chance to work with them on a variety of projects, including their moody Modern Cottage primary bathroom and a guest bath donning marble from top to bottom in their new Modern Colonial home.
This time, we’ve asked Julia to create four tile-focused mood boards, making it easier than ever to achieve her elevated traditional-meets-modern aesthetic in your own homes.
For this fantasy kitchen, I was very inspired by our current kitchen, but I wanted to give it more of a mid-century modern twist. – Julia
Julia’s choice of the Elisir Royal Fume Chevron wood-look flooring offers a light and elegant base for the moody olive green paint and Petal Emerald Mosaic to bring stunning drama to the space. “How cool would this mosaic tile be as a backsplash?” Julia wrote. “A backsplash is a statement-maker.” If you’re looking for more kitchen tile inspo, explore our 13 Beautiful Kitchen Backsplash Ideas.
This is a very elevated take on a ‘coastal’-inspired bathroom. This is the perfect example of letting the tile set the tone and personality of the space and then making selections that support it. – Julia
“The tile that inspired it all!” Julia wrote about our Zara Blue. “As someone who loves designing with color, this blue tile would make such a statement.” We love a bold tile pattern, and Julia did not disappoint with her choice of this attention-grabbing floral tile. Coordinating it with the neutral Imperial Gris Subway offers an effortless balance of visual interest and calming softness.
Everything about this dressing room is feminine and delicate, starting with that jaw-dropping tile. – Julia
Julia’s dressing room pick, the Lafaenza Oro Crema, offers the best of both worlds – the luxe appearance of natural stone along with the durability of porcelain. We adore the warm, soft accents and furniture pieces she paired with the tile to pull out its shading. “When I saw this tile, my heart stopped. I might have to sneak it into our bathroom/closet remodel next year. It has the most feminine, pink undertones,” Julia wrote.
This utilitarian space is earthy and neutral, but far from ordinary. The textured tile would make a mudroom feel historic and full of character. – Julia
Pulling from one of our favorite collections, Julia chose the brick-look Jerica Ceniza for this charming, rustic mudroom. “Subway tile, but make it textured!” Julia wrote. “This almost looks like a herringbone brick, but it’s porcelain. Would bring so much character to a mudroom.“

]]>The post How One Tile Installer Built a Brand Trusted by Pros appeared first on The Tile Shop Blog.
]]>After a simple conversation with a friend and fellow trade professional revealed a gap in the market, a new business idea sparked for longtime tile setter Chase Twitchell. With 19+ years of industry experience under his belt, he knew firsthand how drain systems for tiled showers could be improved, making everyday installation jobs easier for people like himself and his peers. Thus, the idea for FloFX was born. Marketed as a brand “by an installer, for installers,” FloFX offers products like advanced bonding flange drains and premium grates that only continue to grow in popularity among professionals in the tile community.
Keep reading to learn more about tile installer-turned-FloFX founder, Chase Twitchell, and his fascinating story!
I grew up in a small town in Southern Utah with a single mom of 5 kids. As a teenager, I got my start in the flooring trade by spending the summers with my brother, a 3rd generation floor coverings installer. Fresh out of high school, I knew I wanted to get into the tile trade. I started as a helper for a company doing custom tile work and quickly got promoted to tile setter. A few years later, I thought I was ready to go out on my own and got my tile contractor’s license at 21. I quickly realized that I had a lot to learn! 19 years later, I’m still learning new things every day.
I was talking to one of my good friends, Rod Katwyk, Owner of RodKat Custom Shower Trays, about his products and the shower drains he was using. He had a few options from some of the bigger manufacturers, but nothing that was really a perfect fit for his application. After this conversation and seeing the current offerings, I knew I could make something better. That’s when I set out to create the Universal Bond Flange Kit. With a universal outlet, it’s ready for whatever you show up to on a jobsite. Sometimes you’ll need to connect to a bare 2” waste pipe and other times you’ll need to adapt to an existing 3-piece clamping drain. Our universal kit is like 2 drain kits in one.
The concept started in my garage with a grinder and a piece of sheet metal. I didn’t have access to a welder, so hot glue held the poorly cut pieces of metal together just long enough for me to realize that it was a horrible idea. It solved almost no problems and carried over all the issues installers face when installing stainless linear drains – most notably, bent flanges in shipping and having to use a no-hub/rubber boot for the waste pipe connection. I quickly realized that plastic injection molding was the way to go. It brings repeatability, durability and enhanced geometry not available with stamped sheet metal. However – I had zero experience with 3D design or plastic prototyping at this time.
So, after spending the next weekend banging my head on the keyboard trying to learn the basics of a 3D design program and eventually finding a deal on Facebook Marketplace for a 3D printer, I loaded my first design and waited… 24 hours later, I was holding my 1st 3D printed prototype. And it was garbage.
I spent the next year making revision after revision. Each version a little better than the last. Learn a new 3D design technique – make a new revision – print another prototype. 3D printing really was the game changer. Being able to hold and feel your prototype to see how the parts interact with each other was key to making a good product.
The current Universal Bond Flange Kit has around 78 revisions. It was finally good enough.
The biggest advantage we have is our installer-centric focus. I’m positive that I wouldn’t have been able to make a product that has been so well reviewed without my experience setting tile. Every part of the design was built around the installation first. I knew that it had to be something that I would want to install myself.
The under-flange mortar cavities lock the flange into the setting material for a rock-solid installation. The universal outlet sets you up for almost any drain connection you need to make and the kits come with all the grate install components giving you everything you need to install tile and grout without needing the actual grate kit in order to complete the installation. Not to mention, both versions of our drain kits offer horizontal grate adjustment to nail the tile layout with designs that prevent mosaics from sagging around the grate.
I love talking to and meeting installers, especially when they have a problem that I can offer a quick and easy solution to. I love seeing some of the epic projects that FloFX has been used on! 2 out of 3 finalists for Floor Covering Installer Magazine’s Best Shower Award were using FloFX drains in 2022. I’m humbled to have that caliber of installers using our products.
Make connections as soon as you can. Find a mentor that can answer questions and give you advice when you get stuck. As a tile contractor, I know people who are smarter than me that I could call for advice, and I don’t think I could have made it without them. The same goes for my role with FloFX.
This is a tough one because I’ve made friends with so many good people that I look up to in the industry that I would feel horrible If I left even a single one out. This is an awesome industry that I’m very fortunate to be a part of.
The biggest thing I’ll be focusing on in 2023 is building out a team to help take FloFX to the next level. I’m currently handling all areas of the business on my own – everything from sales and marketing to inventory and accounting. Bringing in people who are better than me at some of those things will free up my time to focus more on the things I excel at. We’ll be able to have better products, better marketing, better service and a better business overall. The future is bright!
Living in Southern Utah, we’re blessed with the beautiful outdoors. I spend a lot of my free time outside. Racing dirt bikes, mountain biking and fishing take up most of my free time when I’m not playing competitive slow-pitch softball.

]]>Inspired by one of the first DIY projects they tackled in their new North Carolina Modern Colonial home – a custom penny round floor pattern for the powder room – Julia created a similar look in this space with 1″ hex tiles made of matte black porcelain and Hampton Carrara marble.
This tile project ended up being the most intricate but also one of the most beautiful tile jobs we have done in a home.
–Julia Marcum
So, aside from walls lined in Hampton Carrara subway tile and the striking custom floor pattern, what is it that elevates this bathroom from beautiful to breathtaking? Trim. Trim. And more trim. While these small tile accents may seem subtle, this design proves how much impact they really can have. The sleek black pencil liner draws the eye throughout the space and offers the perfect amount of contrast, while the marble durand adorns walls with dimension and interest in the form of elegant box trim.

]]>The post Your Guide to Luxury Vinyl Flooring appeared first on The Tile Shop Blog.
]]>Luxury vinyl flooring is a compelling option for both homes and businesses for many reasons. Our newly expanded assortment of vinyl tiles and planks feature reinforced wear layers that provide the ultimate protection against splashes, scratches, messes and more. With incredible durability, luxury vinyl is ideal for high-traffic areas in commercial buildings, as well as residential spaces such as laundry rooms, home gyms, mudrooms and more.
So, what exactly are the features of luxury vinyl flooring that make it a top choice by homeowners and trade professionals alike? With wear layers ranging from 12 – 20 mil., all of our LVT planks are 100% waterproof and scratch-, stain- and dent-resistant, providing maximum durability and longevity. Beyond that, our vinyl planks and tiles offer DIY-friendly installation with a simple click-lock system, sound absorption, added underfoot comfort, and compatibility with radiant heated flooring systems for year-round warmth.
Durability doesn’t mean compromising on good design. With a variety of wood- and stone-look planks, our selection of luxury vinyl flooring has beautiful options for every style and taste.
Love the appearance of classic hardwood? Find shades ranging from soft blonde to rich brown with realistic graining and knotting. Looking for something a little more luxurious? Vivid veining and smooth finishes bring marble- and stone-looks alive with opulence.
Once you’ve chosen your style, be sure to explore our extensive selection of coordinating luxury vinyl trim to give your floors a seamless, finished look.
Installation of luxury vinyl tile and luxury vinyl planks is straightforward for both DIYers and industry professionals. Cutting and fitting each piece is a relatively easy process as they simply snap, click, or lock together. For further assistance with installation, we recommend referencing the manufacturer’s product information for detailed installation instructions. With the right tools and materials, even first-time DIYers should be able to achieve a professional-looking finish.
Luxury vinyl flooring is a highly versatile option that can be installed in virtually any space within residential and commercial buildings. Each waterproof plank is designed for maximum comfort and durability, featuring a thicker construction and reinforced wear layers that resist scratches, dents and stains. This makes luxury vinyl floors perfect for high-traffic areas that are prone to increased wear and tear, from kitchens, mudrooms and laundry rooms to gyms, office spaces and lobbies.
Most luxury vinyl flooring does not require underlayment. However, moisture barriers and foam padding are commonly used to offer added protection and comfort. We recommend consulting an installation expert at one of our showrooms and the manufacturer’s product information.
Sweep or vacuum luxury vinyl floors to quickly remove dirt and prevent scratches from larger particles. Wipe down your vinyl planks or tiles with a damp cloth or mop and a gentle cleaning solution (E.G. A mild detergent mixed with hot water and white vinegar). Do not use harsh chemicals like bleach, ammonia or cleansers containing these ingredients.
Similar to apples and oranges, luxury vinyl flooring and traditional tile floors both come with their advantages. Both are comprised of long-lasting materials that offer timeless visual appeals. We recommend speaking with a tile expert at your local Tile Shop to determine which option is right for you.

Carmel’s creativity didn’t stop there, though – she also created a one-of-a-kind outdoor coffee table tiled with our Track Stack Navy. The Hampton Niles marble flooring features a sophisticated basketweave pattern that offers the perfect amount of visual interest without stealing the show.
